Author Spotlight: V. K. Dixon
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a wife and mom, a Christian, and an avid reader. I’ve been writing for almost twenty-five years, but I only started publishing a little over two years ago, now I have three books published with five others coming soon.
What genre(s) do you write?
I primarily write fantasy but also romance.
Are you traditionally or independently published? Or both?
I’m self-published. (I make that distinction because typically indie publishing connotates a small press or independent publishing company taking part in the process, and I’ve done it entirely myself.)
If you could use five words to describe your writing style, what would they be?
Relational, atmospheric, fantastical, complex, and banter-ific.
Who inspires you most as a writer?
That’s a really difficult question to answer. I don’t typically think of individuals so much as specific works, but I suppose that can translate into the authors themselves. I have to start with Christopher Paolini because reading Eragon when I was fourteen was what convinced me I wanted to be a writer. But I’m also highly inspired by Jane Austen and her ability to use relationships to tell a story, J.K. Rowling and her way of bringing a world to life, and Brandon Sanderson and his incredible ability to create individual complex worlds that somehow fit together so seamlessly.
What is the hardest part about writing?
Time. I have so many ideas and stories I want to tell, but finding the time to get to them all feels impossible. I’ve learned that I can write roughly 1,400 words per hour, which would mean that I could theoretically finish a 100,000-word book in about a 72-hour period of nonstop writing. But finding those 72 hours is far more difficult than you might think, and sometimes it takes an hour just to get into the groove of writing when you’ve been away from it for a while.
What is your favorite passage of Scripture and why?
I have two:
1) My guiding verse for my writing is Philippians 4:8, and I personally love it in The Passion Translation: “Keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always.” I use this as a sort of compass to ask the question: “Am I writing about things that are authentic and real, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind?” Not everything in my stories will reflect this 100% because villains can’t demonstrate this behavior, but I always want the messages and themes of my stories to carry these truths.
2) My favorite verse for daily living is Psalm 116:11 (ESV), “You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” I just love that reminder that God makes known to us the path of life. We find joy and pleasure forevermore in his presence. This verse always reminds me to keep my focus on Christ and his presence.
What’s next for you?
Lots! 😂 While I will be publishing two more books in my Archives of the Warden series next year, my big next project is a Kickstarter for my fantasy romance trilogy, Warriors & Mages. I intend to publish all three books at once so that people can binge them in one go, should they like.
If you could recommend three clean books to others, what would they be?
The Mistborn Trilogy by Brandon Sanderson, The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling, and The Belgariad by David Eddings. (Or you could just read my books. 😂)
Besides reading and writing, what are your hobbies?
I do CrossFit three times a week and love watching the Games and Rogue Invitational. I also crochet and play piano (though I haven’t done that in a while).
Is there anything else that you’d like to share?
If you’re a writer who’s hoping to make it a career, don’t wait to start. Begin finding your community, write like there’s no tomorrow, and don’t be afraid to take a risk. Writing is hard, but it is so worth it. And you’ll only succeed if you try.
